Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you’ve heard about Keto diet. With celebs from Kim and Kourtney Kardashian to Gwyneth Paltrow publicly declaring their love for the eating plan, the popularity of Keto has skyrocketed.

But what is Keto? Here is some explanation to get you started.

Chemistry Behind the Process:

Human body produce’s energy from 2 source – carbohydrates or fats . Think of it like a car which work’s on petrol or diesel to produce energy. When you eat something that is high in carbs (that yummy paratha’s/pasta), your body will increase insulin level.

  • Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy so that is why it’s the preferred energy source for your body.
  • Insulin is produced to process the glucose in your bloodstream by transporting it around your body.

Only issue with this process is that when glucose is used as a primary energy source, fats are not needed for energy, in short are stored.

Let say you are eating bread with cheese, body will use energy from bread and rest will be stored in form of fat if you are not doing exercise.

Also, when your body cannot store extra glucose, it get’s stored in form of fat which doesn’t get used until we do intense workout. When your body runs out of glucose it tells your brain you need more ,so you end up reaching for a quick snack like a chips or idli or milk tea.

And all these things tricks you and leads to building up a body that you don’t really want.

So what’s the solution?

Make your body FAT burner instead of CARB

Lowering intake of carbs(breads, pasta, sugar etc.) signal’s body to look for alternate source of energy which makes your body enter in a metabolic state known as ketosis.

It’s a natural process when your body is in a state of ketosis, it produces ketones. Ketones occur from the breakdown of fat in the liver. You may think that why your body is not constantly breaking down fats in liver – it’s because when you intake carbs , body increases insulin level which prevents the fat cells from entering bloodstream so they are stored in the body.

When you lower your carb intake, glucose levels, along with blood sugar levels, drop which in turn lowers insulin levels.

This allows the fat cells to release the water they are storing (it’s why you first see a drop in water weight) and then the fat cells are able to enter the bloodstream and head to the liver.

This is the end goal of the keto diet. You don’t enter ketosis by starving your body. You enter ketosis by starving your body of carbohydrates.

When your body is producing optimal ketone levels you begin to notice many health benefits like weight loss, physical and mental performance etc.

So basically, fuel source is changed (in a good way) along with changing how you view nutrition.

Your body actually produces 10 times more energy with fat compared to carbohydrates, so you feel more energetic and happy

But before you give keto a try, keep in mind that it’s way better to start a keto diet the right way and avoid the mistakes others make. That way you can enjoy the benefits of the diet faster and with better results. Here are some tips before you start.
